So I like Schoolly D, the Philadelphia Eagles, and Paddy's Pub. No I'm not from Philly, what a stupid question. But back to some Golden Era Philly hip hop from the Greatest Man Alive. No this isn't about Schoolly D again. I'm talking about EST, the acknickulous one.
EST from Three Times Dope did something on this album, that has been done many times since throughout the history of Hip Hop. He made up a word out of thin air. Just made a new fucking word and just used it like we all already knew what it meant. Motherfucker is just putting words out into the ether, trying to make a thing and just let us guess what it meant.
We were left to monitor it's usage in his songs as our only way of figuring out what the fuck it even meant. That word, was Acknickulous.
What the fuck does that word even mean? Well, it means awesome, but like, really Awesome. But let's put awesone into relative old school hip hop terminology.
Okay so if Awesome = Dope and this guy is really awesome, them he must be really dope. So dope That you could even say that he is Three Times Dope! Now does the name of the group make sense? Okay, Because it only took me 29 years to figure that out.
Of course, 29 years ago I was watching this more than trying to understand his made up words.
Of course, now, 29 years later, that kind of happened again.
Well shit, both Kirk Gibson and Justin Turner are definitely Acknickulous! Okay that doesn't sound cool anymore. But it works for Three Times Dope so we'll just roll with it.
So in 1988, I really liked this track, mostly for one thing. The Muddy Waters Mannish Boy sample. Otherwise, I wasn't convinced these guys were as fresh as they were stating. But then they released Funky Dividends, and that all changed.
The funky flow. The I I I. And the fucking sampled beat from Synthetic Substitution pumping throughout the track, coupled with the sample from Delegation's Oh Honey. For me, at that moment in time, in 1988, "the world was very different now." Samples were filling my head, and I began hearing the music in a different way, trying to understand the smaller parts put together to make the whole song. But with better understanding, came better appreciation of the Hip Hop groups like Three Times Dope, which at first, I did not like at all, purely on the grounds that he made up the word Acknickulous. I got over it, just like how people got over my usage of the word Vaginatron. They are just words and we have Freedom of Speech!
